I know this much is true

Published by happyhensel at 6:18 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

There used to be a time in my life that I thought, “There has to be something more exciting than this!” It’s like one day you wake up an adult and think, “This is it?” You get up, go about your routine all in an effort to make it to the end of the day simply so that you can wake up and do it all over again. Sure, things would be a little bit different sometimes. Relatives would visit, new babies would be born but for the most part life was sane and predictable.

It’s amazing what a crazy diagnosis of a disease you have never heard of will do to break up monotony. In the blink of an eye, my life got a whole lot more exciting. Maybe exciting is the wrong word. When I think of exciting I think of a roller coaster ride. Yes there are ups and downs but you know in the end nobody is going to get hurt or be in pain. That is not real life. In real life, people get hurt and you have to watch them struggle and know there is not a single thing you can do to stop it. But like a roller coaster, there are ups and downs and you know that the only way to survive is to strap yourself in tight and hold on. And strap myself in I have.

So for today, for this very moment, I welcome boring. I love the predictability of knowing my kids will destroy my house, my dogs will dig giant craters in the yard and the mailman will bring a bunch of bills everyday. I will wake up and my husband will make me coffee, I will get stuck behind the school bus on the way to work and inevitably be late, I will laugh hard with my students about something really juvenile and forget for a minute that I am the one in charge.

Nobody knows what the future holds. We are living in rough and uncertain times. They say in times like these it is important to remember that there have always been times like these. And with that I choose to live my life one boring day at a time. I think I’ve had my fill of excitement for a very, very long time.
